Origin: Cloves are an aromatic spice that are native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. They are the flower buds of an evergreen clove tree. Cloves are now more widely available in India, the West Indies, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and Madagascar.


Recipes: Cloves are a versatile spice which are used baking, cooking or used to add some warm spice flavor to a beverage. It is used in the form of whole cloves, ground clove powder or clove oil.
In baking, cloves add a wonderful spice flavor to many cakes and cookies. A well-known favorite is the gingerbread cookie. 

Cloves are a staple in many dishes especially in countries such as Asia, Africa, Indian and Middle-East countries. It is also one of the main ingredients found in a Mexican Mole.

As its name implies, it will leave your insides feeling warm and fuzzy.
The warm spice also adds a wonderful aromatic flavor to hot beverages as pumpkin spice, chai tea or a hot toddy!
Or it can also be enjoyed as a refreshing cold toddy.

Cures: Cloves have been used in Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic healing for centuries.
Cloves have many benefits that help improve overall health.

The antioxidant qualities found in cloves can help protect against all types of degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and many more. Cloves are also known to help with digestive problems and can provide relief against nausea, motion sickness, hiccups and vomiting. With its warming quality, it is great to fight a cold, help with congestion or sore throat. For a sore throat or to promote oral health, you can dilute five drops of clove essential oil in 1/2 cup water and use as a gargle.

Cloves are known to have analgesic benefits and clove oil can be used to treat tooth aches or other dental issues. They are often found in natural mouthwash or toothpastes to promote healthy gums and help against bad breath. Adding a drop or two of clove oil in the clean mouth can help alleviate tooth pain and help curb gingivitis.

Cloves can also be enjoyed in a tea form. To make a cup of clove tea, grind 1 tablespoon of whole cloves in a coffee mill until chopped into small pieces. Pour 1 cup boiling water over the spice and steep (covered) for 15 minutes. Strain and sweeten to taste with honey.


Household Uses: Have you heard of a clove pomader – it is an orange with cloves stuck in it.

These are a natural deterrent for flies and insects – they are so aromatic and they look pretty too!
